FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How many more miles per gallon will I gain after installing the Eco Block Fuel Saver?
Results vary based on vehicle engine size and style of driving. The average increase in MPG for an economy car is 7% more than your current average. For example, if your vehicle is giving you 30 MPG, you can gain an additional 2 MPG. If you have a larger engine or a less fuel efficient vehicle, you will receive a larger increase in fuel mileage. This is based on our 7 years of in and out of house testing on a variety of vehicle types in different countries worldwide.
How does the Eco Block Fuel Saver work?
There are many sensors in your vehicle. There is one located under your hood that supplies the most important information about your engine to the computer of your car (or ECU) that controls it. This sensor is called the Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor, which is located right after your air filter on a plastic tube. The MAF sensor’s tip extends into this tube and reads the air flow volume entering the engine, so that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) can calculate how much fuel to add. This mix of air and fuel is referred to as the AFR, or Air Fuel Ratio.
The Crawford Eco Block Fuel Saver moves the MAF sensor’s tip to the optimum location within the air flow, which subsequently changes the AFR calculation in the engine’s computer to one that is the most efficient for fuel mileage, tailpipe emissions, and engine performance.
The part is incredibly easy to install, only requiring a screwdriver and less than 5 minutes of your time. All components needed to install are included with your purchase.
When I enter my vehicle into the selector, it said there is not a Eco Block Fuel Saver available for my car. Why?
Either your vehicle is not modern enough (typically older than 2000), or we are still developing a Eco Block Fuel Saver that is compatible. Contact us for more info. Include your year, make, and model, so we can let you know if there is a product on its way.
Is the Eco Block Fuel Saver smog compliant?
Yes, you will have lower tailpipe emissions with the Eco Block Fuel Saver.
I know a bit about cars. Can you explain to me how the Eco Block Fuel Saver works on a deeper level?
The Eco Block Fuel Saver tells the engine computer that there is less air entering the engine which causes the computer the lower the fuel injector pulse rate to achieve the correct Air Fuel Ratio (AFR). It also advances the ignition timing and camshaft timing on vehicles that have variable cam timing. The newer automatic transmissions that are computer controlled use the input from the MAF sensor as a variable, so the shift points feel better as well. Basically every “load based” table within the engine computer will be changed by this one simple product, as the “load” is derived from the MAF sensors’ input.
The air fuel ratio during the “closed loop fueling mode” is based on a predetermined AFR table that uses an “air fuel ratio sensor” or “lambda sensor” in the exhaust system. This sensor monitors the air fuel ratio, while the engine control computer (or ECU) makes the necessary trims to the fuel injector pulse rate so the air fuel ratio matches the predetermined AFR table. Your engine runs in the “closed loop” fueling mode during light loads and hopefully at cruising speeds.
In contrast, when you accelerate or ask the engine to work harder, the ECU switches to the “open loop” fueling mode. In this mode, the Lambda sensor in the exhaust system is totally ignored, and the ECU dumps fuel into the engine as there are no emission standards from our government mandating the AFR. Without the variable input from the Lambda sensor, the ECU must use a fixed fuel table to control the fuel injector flow. It is at this point that the Eco Block Fuel Saver does a majority of its work. This mode is also where all the emission/tailpipe savings come from, because we move the AFR from around 10.8:1 to around 12.2:1. If you look at an AFR vs. Emissions graph you will instantly see how much lower the emissions become; shown below.
I have other modifications done to my vehicle. Will the Eco Block Fuel Saver be compatible?
If you have modified anything that changes the Air Fuel Ratio of your engine then our Eco Block Fuel Saver will not be compatible.
